September is a wonderful time for renewal after the summer season. At this time of year, we plan to change habits that crept in over the lovely warm sunny evenings, some of which have taken their toll on our energy and wellbeing - the glass of wine too many, or a few late nights here and there, perhaps more sugar than we normally consume. We generally have more time on holiday to ‘be in the moment’ and the biggest decision we have to make is what book to read! Then September hits us with a bang! It’s a bit like New Year all over again. Additionally, it’s also an extremely busy time of year for many, having to catch up on workloads that have built up whilst on holiday, kids returning to school, with the pressure all this activity brings. We can see a window of time before Christmas festivities set in and all the plans for improving health get squashed into a very small space. Soon we forget how refreshed we felt on our holiday!
So, when we come to think about our health and wellbeing goals, how do we make time for the things we really want to achieve when faced with stress and a multitude of commitments from our jobs, families, friends and home life? We can’t expect new habits to happen by magic - we need to allocate time and plan for them. In other words, we need to bring health top of our agenda. ‘I don’t have time’ is what I hear often but really there IS time, it’s a matter of finding it!
One tool which really helps us to find this essential time is the ‘Wheel of Life’.
How the Wheel of Life works helps you find time:
The Wheel is made up of 8 segments with the categories as follows:
Friends and Family
Fun and Leisure
All of these areas are important for our health and happiness. However sometimes life gets out of balance and we can easily neglect the supposedly ‘non essential’ categories, often our health goes to the bottom of the pile as self care isn’t obligatory, unlike paying the bills and managing the family or household.
It can be really helpful to review the 8 categories in detail and you will see at a glance what your level of satisfaction is in each area, and where you need to devote time to achieve success.
Once our life is in balance we can allocated time to our health goals and set some clear goals. That way you have the magic solution that removes the stress of not achieving what you want, and saves time in the long run.
Ask yourself these questions:
Is your life in balance?
What score do you have for health?
Are you allowing time for meal planning and food prep, and have you a system for food shopping?
Is there anything ‘non essential’ in other segments that can be cancelled, postponed or delegated?
Have you boundaries in place for protecting your time - Apps for social media, breaks from computer, do people drain your time and energy?
To improve the health ‘segment’ you can choose 3 goals for action, such as:
take lunch to work
have an alcohol free week
get off the bus a stop earlier
Benefits of Finding the Time for Your Health Goals
be more organised with systems in place to have healthy food to hand
allocate time for menu planning
keep an eye on the contents of the fridge and freezer so you use up food and reduce wastage
adopt time saving practices such as using a slow cooker or batch cooking at weekends
free up time to walk more or book an exercise class
